Zombies VS Werewolves Part 5 Rise of the Undead!

image post

I have always been facinated by zombies.  So it comes as no surprise that one of my favourite ways to play magic is with a Zombie theme. I have been tasked to tell you all my 6 top zombie cards. So lets start with a basic standard common.

Walking Corpse.

This is for just the perfect form of a zombie. Its 1B for a 2/2, and it’s the perfect standard card I any kind of deck. Its cheap, usefull and great for chum.

The next card is great for ramping up your zombie generation. Endless Ranks of the Dead.

This card is great for bringing an easy and reliable source of zombies. Its sits there and does all the work for you and allows you to concentrate on flooding your opponents with zombies. And it only costs 2BB.

Unbreathing Horde is one of my new favourite cards just for the simple fact that any source that would deal it damage makes it only go down by 1 +1/+1 counter. Its great for blocking and if you are using proliferation they can quickly become deadly.

Next is in my card is in my top 3 for great zombies cards in standard at the moment. Cemetery reaper.

This is a great card. Its 1BB a 2/2 but dear god I love its static and activated abilities. This is a needed card in any deck that is sporting zombies.

My second favourite card and a fantastic card advantage spell. Moan of the Unhallowed.

This card is the perfect turn 4 play as it gives you basically 2 walking corpses. If you’re in a tight spot the bag 2 more defenders a very strong card for any zombie deck.

Drum roll please cause its my Favourite zombie card. Undead Alchemist.

This is one of the best zombie cards I have seen in a while. Not only does it allow for zombie generation, it also acts like mill. Hurting your opponent by taking away his card advantage and giving you it instead. When used in the right way this card becomes deadly and very scary even long after you’ve been able to use it, cause once those zombies hit the table from this cards effect they don’t go away.

So Boils and Ghouls that is why the zombies are better. They are cheap, reliable and they always come in large numbers :) Goodbye folks  and don’t let the Zombies bite!

  1. Don’t forget Diegraf Ghoul. Ok, it comes into play tapped, but on turn 1! So it’s a blocker on turn 2 or can attack.

Plus you didn’t mention the Alchemists favourite tool, Trepanation blades all round I say! When you swing with a Trepanation blade attached zombie (with your alchemist sitting beck) you get the double fun of watching your opponent mill (getting some zombies) and then see then decide whether they should block it (oh no you lose a 2/2 token zombie you just gave the blade too, the horror) or get milled AGAIN!

    It’s lovely. So very lovely.

    • u do realise the trepadation blade does not create any zombies from the mill giving the +1′s?

      • It does if you have an Undead Alchemist in play. :D All Mill sources do it you have an Alchemist in play.

It’s such a lovely lovely card.

        • no it doesnt, undead alchemist states ” if a zombie you control would deal combat damage to a player, instead that player puts that many cards into a graveyard, whenever a creature is put into a graveyard this way, exile it and put a 2/2 black zombie into play under you control”
it states that only through damage dealt by zombies, any other type of mill, the undead alchemist has no effect, soz to ruinin it for yah, i was pissed when i realised man.

      • Side note, one of my current Random Standard deck ideas is based around the horrible misuse of the Undead Alchemist. And I’m running a Zombie themed EDH deck too.

        So I may be biased.

        • scratch all i said, im qouting what i was told, i just read it over myself sorry bout all that

          • S’all right. The moment when that clicks in your brain is quite fun. It’s still a slow card in Standard, but it can be quite funny in limited if you can pull the deck together.

        • can i ask how u manage to pull of the edh deck based around the alchemist, since you can only run one, do u have multiple return from graveyard spells? or is it about making it indestructible?

          • Oh no the EDH deck is just chock full of zombies. All kinds of zombies. With Thraximundar as a general. It did have the Alchemist in, but as I only have 3 I took him out for the standard deck. (Which I really should get round to posting).

Last night I pulled a turn 4 Rooftop Storm followed by a turn 5 Mind Unbound. And then lots and lots of Zombies.

(Though the deck does have a certain reanimation theme and I would like to get Graveborn to add even more reanimation to it).

  3. Oh here’s another thing, Unbreathing Horde + Cemetery Reaper = Blocker the undying!
When your Unbreathing Horde removes it’s last counter it doesn’t die if it’s Toughness has been pumped by something (like the Reaper) and now it can block for ever!

Or attack every turn with a Trepanation Blade!

Bwa ha ha ha ha ha….
