Prerelease Pandemonium

Hi there everyone.

Today I would like to talk about the recent m12 prerelease. For those of you who managed to attend the event will know its any of the last two core sets with a few extra added nasties.

Nasty is the word id use to describe the deck I managed to build from the abysmal pool of the boosters I was given.

For every player that pools a Titan or Planeswalker there is several players who pull the dregs of the card pull and could only build a deck that wouldn’t stand up in even a draft deck. I won’t bore anyone with the details of the deck as I have cast aside the shoddy attempt to make any of my cards work able I will talk about how badly the prerelease went for me.

Out of a possible 6 games I won 1 and lost 4 so rather than stay and be beaten for the 5th time I thought id pack up and leave. What was the highlight of the day was opening some boosters id bought before hand. After splashing the cash for one I decided to buy a second one and managed to net a Primeval Titan, Frost Titan, Chandra, Garruk and Sorin to name a few of the awesome rares I pulled. I wish the prerelease would have gone better for me but hey that’s just how some of the days go.

My friends who came with me didn’t do well either and what was more annoying that I had t-shirts made advertising this website. My friend Cormac blamed the t-shirts for our bad luck but I doubt it I blame the piss poor boosters I was given. I really should stop being so bitter about it but unfortunately i’m busy this weekend of the release so that’s my only prerelease for the next two months before Innistrad.

If you feel like sharing your prerelease decks and stories comment below or feel free to email me at stefan_d_durie@hotmail.com

Bye for now and stay frosty.

  2. I thought I might offer some constructive criticism, since I’m not entirely sure what it is that I’m supposed to take away from this article.

You say you “won’t bore anyone” with the details of your deck, but after mentioning how horrible your pool is I can’t help but want to know what your deck (and pool) looked like. A listing of your pool, your thoughts on specific cards and decks that didn’t quite make it as well as the final list would have been a lot more informative than a bad beats story (a quick tip: nobody is interested in bad beats stories unless they are truly spectacular.)

It’s a good thing that you got some chase rares in boosters you bought but again, there isn’t much to chew on there.

It’s true that there are good days and bad, but it’s important to review your performance to try and mitigate that, rather than just blaming the boosters. I’m fairly sure you didn’t build the perfect deck out of the cards you opened, nor did you play perfectly during the rounds. This isn’t anything personal, since I certainly don’t play perfectly when it comes to limited.

Card evaluation is obviously an important skill to possess in a new limited format and you’d do well to think about whether you made the wrong choices about certain cards, if you tried to force an archetype too much, etc. Posting your thoughts on an article like this would allow others to offer opinions that you otherwise may not have considered.

On the topic of card evaluation, it would have been nice for you to put forward some insight on the format and set itself. Which cards were better than you originally thought? Were there any that surprised you and performed poorly? This kind of thing is what I – and I would assume, others too – want to read.

I’d also recommend brushing up on your grammar/punctuation a little bit. I’m not trying to be offensive, but your sentences tend to run on and come across as too informal. Perhaps getting someone you know to proofread your articles before posting would help.

As I said, I’m not trying to offend you, just trying to be constructive since you seem fairly serious with regards to writing Magic articles (having t-shirts made, etc.) I hope I got that across.

    • Thank you for your very valued insight however I do believe this article was not written to highlight the ins and outs of m12. I wrote the article just to highlight how my prerelease experience went and was not doing an analysis of the new core in general. It is too soon to make comparisons or judgments of the new set as it isn’t officially out yet. I was not writing a deck list for this post. If I was writing a deck list of the cards I gathered I would have created links for them as I have done with my other articles. I do value opinions of my readers and will take on board what you have said. I do tend to write my articles on the hoof so to speak so there maybe some errors that slip through the cracks. I tend to write informally as I like to engage my reader and help them feel apart of what I write. So I normally write in the style I do and most of the feed back I have from my readers is good. I can appreciate you trying to help me with criticism and I’m always willing to listen to any readers comments, I hope you continue to read my posts and always feel free to comment.
