Facing the mountanious mana curve
Posted by Danny the awesome | Filed under About me, Avacyn Restored Spoiler
Hi there everyone.
Today I thought id talk about something that’s been seriously bugging me about the new set soon to be released in May Avacyn Restored.
Now I’m sure some of you who have seen the spoilers have noticed the overly expensive cast cost of some cards and thought hmmm seems quite high while I on the other hand felt like Id been kicked in the vitals!
Eight mana for an Angel is an outrage! I’m sure quite a few of you may disagree with me but come on 3 white mana for an 8/8 vigilance that gives things indestructibility…
Yeah well maybe she does deserve a high cast cost but what’s with all the high cast costs. Take for instance this gem on the demon side.
It’s the same cast cost just more expensive on the coloured mana needed to cast him.
Now I get why some things need to be expensive like for instance the Eldrazi cards in Rise of the Eldrazi as they were ridiculously powerful.
But both Avacyn and Griselbrand seem like weak sauce in comparison but still that pricey mana tag makes playing them a struggle to make these creatures have an impact on the game at all. I’m aware there is some ramp particularly one such beauty as this.

If we excuse the German txt here’s what she does :{T}: Add three mana of any one color to your mana pool. Spend this mana only to cast creature spells
Now with this card these high cast cost would seem more bearable but 1 card doesn’t make playing these cards any less mana intensive.
Now the cards I really like so far are the low cast cost bombs like:
I know I’ve mentioned this card before but it’s just brilliant and should be classed as a mythic moving on.
An awesome 3 drop that puts even vampire nighthawk to shame, one of my favorite three drops, it’s just lovely even with the downside of sacking creatures.
Another low 4 cast that drops a 5/4 in to play with only the minor downside of you sacking a creature. It’s got undying so two fatties for only the low low price of 4 mana
This is the last of the low casts I’m going to talk about today and it certainly packs a punch. A two cast demon that’s a 4/3! Brilliant sign me up! Oh wait my opponent can have it if it dies
still cant really expect an awesome card like that without a huge downside.
Now what I’m trying to say is the huge mana costs certainly limit the usage of certain cards in standard but they are very likely to be used in another slower format like edh. This shouldn’t an excuse for wizards to make near unplayable cards as I’m sure some of the rares they have made in recent times have been simply awful. I get why some of the cast costs are high to highlight these creatures the cards represent are exceptionally powerful but could wizards lower the colour casts costs just a tiny bit?
That’s all for today stay tuned for more insights based on the spoiler’s maybe even a deck list!
